HATFIELD-MCCOY TRAIL SYSTEM
DEVIL'S BACKBONE ADVENTURE RESORT is located in the middle of the Devil Anse Trail System with convenient ride-in, ride-out access. A full day's adventure - or more - can be found in either direction. Our property accesses Buffalo Mountain Trail System near Williamson to the east and Rockhouse Trail System near Gilbert to the west.

Answers to frequently asked questions about the trail system:

All riders must have a trail permit. You may carry it with you if you don't always wear the same helmet. You may purchase permits at the resort.

Permits are good for the calendar year in which it was purchased.

Are the Hatfield McCoy Trails open all year?
Yes, the Hatfield McCoy Trails are open all year, as is Devil's Backbone Adventure Resort!
Do the Hatfield McCoy Trails close?
The trails are open 12 months of the year, but only during daylight hours for the safety of the trail riders.
How long are the Hatfield McCoy Trails?
Hatfield McCoy Trail System is over 1,200 miles across nine counties.
How old do you have to be to ride the trails?
The minimum age to ride the trails is 6 years old.
How much are permits?
Hatfield McCoy Trail permits may be purchased at the store for $26.50 for WV residents and military veterans and $65 for out-of-state riders.
How far away are other trails?
The resort is directly on Hatfield McCoy Trail, Devil Anse Trail 59. Buffalo Mountain Trail is about an hour to the west by trail.
Rockhouse Trail is about 2.5 hours to the east.
Kentucky Hillbilly Trails are about 6 miles by road to McCarr, KY across from Matewan, WV.
Do you have to wear a helmet?
Yest, all drivers and passengers must wear a DOT or Snell approved helmet when riding the Hatfield McCoy Trails and at the resort.
How long are permits valid for?
Hatfield McCoy Trail permits are effective from the date of purchase through December 31st of the same year. Permits bought after mid-November, when the permits for the new year are made available, will remain valid until the following December.
Do you rent SXSs or ATVs?
We do not directly rent machines, but Ridge Runner Outfitters & Guides are located at the resort and offer ATV and SXS rentals, guided tours, repairs, and trail recovery services.
